The ultimate iteration of the 4L's was the 4L70e used behind the 6.0. It has 5 pinions front and rear as well as rollerized thrust bearings. Using the Sonnax Smart Shell adds another thrust bearing and takes the load off the tiny bearing nested inside the rear planetary.

It was, now it's the 4L75. It claims 650 ft/lb capacity. No thanks.

What's strange is the one I saw yesterday had a 2.84 1st and a .75 OD from GM.

It looks like only the Sonnax input carrier kit is the one that changes to the 2.84 ratio for first and 1.55 ratio for second. It looks like 6 pinion planetary gear set. https://www.sonnax.com/parts/3734-2-84-ratio-input-carrier-kit

It looks like a nice upgrade. I'm assuming it also works on the 700R4? But that's not listed. Umm...

This is not the 6 pinion planetary output gearset, right?

Yeah, that's the 4L75E-R to go behind their crate 1,000 hp big block. I'd love to do a deep dive on that one, and I wonder if they're relying on heavy torque management to make it live. It has the stock ratios however.

Looks like I only half remembered correctly, and I think Hagerty made a misprint.
