adding manual ball valve to heater inlet hose

so you can shut the heating circuit when heating is not needed, and thus enhance the a/c performance, because an old air box is never sealed enough and hot and cold air are mixing.
most cars i know have some sort of a valve, not just a flap.

And most valves eventually leak or fail in some way.

I have one that I intend to install on my Vortec 454, but have not done so, yet. It should be fine as long as the engine doesn't rely on the heater circuit to act as a coolant bypass, and our engines do not. I think you bypass is internal to the water pump, and block. Mine is a short hose from the pump to the intake manifold.

There is a vacuum operated bypass valve that gm used for that purpose. Keeps coolant circulation when in bypass.
