Yes got a 98 chevy with the 4.3 v6 and I want this. To sound mean it's lowered and has.role.pan on the back. What exhaust setup in what type of so do you guys think I should have for that sound to give it to you most aggressive sound and be able to hide the exhaust underneath the body

My friend had a 2.9l cologne engine in his ranger and it sounded very nice-throaty. So I'd say you can get a good note out of v6 but can't tell you what to use. Stainless steel obvious choice.

A 4.3 sounds good at idle, but under a load it sounds thrashy. It's in the design of the motor, because some V6's sound good (Audi, Renault, VW, Nissan, Honda) but there's no way to make a 4.3 sound like a V8

The *only* V6 I've ever heard that had a satisfying exhaust note was a 3.1L V6 in my 1991 Chevy Beretta (RPO LH0 - 60 degrees between cylinder banks) with a Walker Dynomax cat-back system. The exhaust through the Dynomax system had a really nice burble to it.

All other GM V6s that I've heard using more open exhaust systems sound like buzz bombs. I find it comical when some V6 Camaro owner tries to make their ride sound nasty. It just doesn't seem to work.

If you just want it to make noise, follow the lead of the rice burners in the world, they seem to have perfected the Annoying Exhaust Sound:superhack:

AFAIK the V8s we all know and love get their unique (and IMHO preferable) sound because the cylinders in each bank don't fire at regular intervals, i.e.,

1–8–4–3–6–5–7–2

Notice that the odd cylinders 5 and 7 fire consecutively and have a long pause between 1 and 3. The even cylinders have a similar pattern.

The new Corvette Z06, which offers a flat-plane crankshaft V-8, each bank fires at regular intervals and has much different exhaust note.

Casey916, man, my first truck was an ‘87 Dodge Dakota. Not sure of the firing orders or any of that technical jazz, but as a birthday gift, my dad had dual exhaust put on. It was some fairly inexpensive turbo muffler and may have had an H or X pipe to add resonance. While it certainly didn’t sound like a V8, it had a low end steady tone at idle, but actually seemed smooth at acceleration. Not slappy or obnoxious rattle at all.

My point is, find you a good muffler shop and they will know how to do it.

I have Pacesetter shorty headers (DO NOT BUY for a 4.3L, you have to cut a chunk out of one flange to clear the CTS) with a Magnaflow Y-pipe/cat and a Gibson single 3" cat back system on my red '97 4.3L truck. It's definitely not a V8 sound above 3500RPM or so, but it's not terribly raspy either and drone is minimal. I'm very happy with the results and I've had other people compliment me on the sound.
