Look at all the opinions regarding electric water pumps from folks that have never used them.
I don't need to stick my hand on the stove to know it's hot. I put electric fans on my truck for a week. The fan controller hiccuped once and I went back to a belt-driven fan. The consequences for such a failure in a water pump are much higher.

normal hydraulic powersteering is extremely reliable
Hydraulic power steering is fairly reliable, but commonly leaks. What it doesn't often do is fail outright. An electric power steering system won't leak, but when it goes out, it doesn't usually have warning signs like piddling fluid on the ground.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of electricity. However, I'm also a fan of stupid simplicity.

Been running EWP for 20 years on my '96 Impala. They easily outlast mechanicals. Manufacturers always under pressure to compromise on the basis of cost. Look at the sheer number of aftermarket parts for these trucks. Implying they're somehow inferior to factory installed parts simply isn't true. Electric pumps are designed to flow coolant at it's optimum rate of flow. Superior rates at low speeds. For example ,city traffic ,idling ,etc. Combined with electric fans can pay even bigger dividends. Heard the same argument(s) against electric fans

How often did you tow with your Impala?

Not sure what towing has to do with electric fans which I do have installed on my K1500?
Or electric water pumps which are easily ,and often installed on Chevy LT1 motors
due to the water pumps are not belt driven to begin with. I can say that just one of the
dual electric fans moves more air than the previous one mounted on the water pump ever could. Plus ,water pumps last a lot longer without that load on their nose. In normal driving fan(s) seldom even come on. Compared to motor driven mechanicals that mooch 10-15hp. all the time. It's no accident that the industry has moved away from mechanical cooling fans in favor of electrics. Factory electrics are pretty good. As the ones on my '96 Impala are still functional 25+ years later with close to 170k miles.

You'll find any weakness in the cooling system towing something.

Do you have numbers for that? A mechanical fan moves a lot of air at higher rpms. I don't think any turbo diesel 3/4 and above trucks have an electric fan, but I thought we were talking about water pumps.

The way things are with fuel economy if the electric water pump provided equal cooling with less fuel consumption, they would have switched by now.

Electric water pumps are not easily installed on the Vortec motor. As they are the LT1.
Are mechanical fans really better ,or are they just cheap? Trucks are by in large exempt from mileage/emission standards. My truck as well as most on this forum are 25+ years old. Consider all the advancements in technology alone over that period. I have found many advantages to many of the mods that I've performed. They aren't for everyone as they require work ,and cost money. Moving both batteries back over seven feet under the back seat improved handling ,and battery life. Doubt the factory considered doing that ,but that doesn't mean their way is better ,just cheaper.
