Hi everyone,

I have a 1994 GMC K1500 with a TBI (obviously) 350 and a 4L60E.

I’m currently in the process of building and engine for it (new heads, intake, carb swapped, bigger cam, etc…)

My question is, how do I control the transmission (like kickdown and torque converter lock etc..) without the TPS on the original throttle body?

Are these 4L60Es standalone and operate those functions on their own? I’ve been told there’s a TV cable that goes to the transmission that controls kickdown but on mine there was only the throttle cable and the cruise control cable that led up to the box on the firewall by the wiper motor. Am I missing something?

Then transmission is brand new as of a few months ago, so swapping out for a 700R4 is out of the question. I’m determined to make this work.

Like I said previously, I’m carb swapping it to a quadrajet to suffice the upgrades i’ve done to the top end, and just because I like carburetors. (call me old fashioned i guess :D)

Any insight would be great!
Thanks

TV cable? There's no kickdown or TV cable on the "E" version of the 4L60e. I believe you need a standalone controller to control the electronics of the transmission.

I don't anything about carbs, but it's been done before. Someone will chime in on what you need

there is a tps on the 94 because it is electronically controlled. your carb will have to have one as well or it wont work. so buy a carb with a spot for an adjustable TPS.

good luck.

For a 4L60E, with out the ECM, you will need a stand alone trans controller. Summit Racing and Jegs have them.

There have been a few people who just used the original ECM to only control the transmission. it will absolutely work. I dont even think you need to modify anything to make it work it just needs the correct signals like VSS and the TPS. I'm not sure about the MAP or MAF as this is a bit over my head but the transmission can be controlled with the original ECM and shift just fine.

Maybe @Erik the Awful is one of those guys I read that from? not sure.

You only need TPS and RPM for the original computer to retain control of the 4L60E. But you will be stuck with stock shift points. You can either change them by chipping the old TBI PCM or throw down on a standalone. For the TPS, I'd just use a remote mount unit and monkey with it until you get your 0-100 sweep correct.

I am both a carburetor and a fuel injection guy. I've drilled my own jets from machine screws, but I also like the on-the-fly adjustment that fuel injection can perform. Having my transmission controlled by a computer with a good strategy is optimal, but being able to just bolt it up and go also has its advantages. I can dig it all.
