THanks 618 Syn,
life would have been easier if I am still in the UK but now am in Algeria, not easy to get genuine parts or proper servicing here,
I think you are right - I will have to retrace my steps and see,
I think the trans is the 80 that came with the 6.5, will have to conf tmrw by using Frank's tip above about connector location

would a bad ol' oil in the trans cause such probs do you think?

I am in a state of distress after hearing some noise emanating from driver side near front wheel,
it happen intermittently mostly when I accelerate on an upward climb and only on the fast gear,
hard to describe the noises, creaking shuddering as if something stuck?
Fast gear? OD or first gear?

Pinger, the gear is question the one with two squares - one inside the other ( as in the fastest)

I think (all fingers crossed) I found the fault ...
few weeks ago I went off road into an area with lots of shrubs, it seems like one those suckers
dislodged the wires that go into the front dif solenoid on the right side,
it was not fully disconnected but somehow it was shorting that caused the solenoid to activate
which am guessing activate the front dif?
I put it back together, so far so good, I will give it a good test tmrw on a long drive down south,

just to confirm - it is an 80 trans (as per Frank's instructions above), again I am guessing the
the 6.5TD came with it's own heavy duty trans?

anyway - thank you all guys, I will keep you posted.

That would be OD as in overdrive.

I hope that's solved it.

Yes, most 6.5's came with a 4L80E (after 93 I think) so they were probably installed as a set.

Some updates ...
the shuddering and noise issue still there after removing and checking the front main drive,
I also though the wire going to the front diff were shorting ... not as simple as that :(
One of yous mentioned if noises/shuddering happen during OD ... THAT DEFINITELY is the case,
when the vehicle is in OD and is "changing" gear after reaching speed of 55mph and beyond,
also it only happen if I accelerate suddenly/forcefully, no probs during slow gentle acceleration.

am at loss here.
