On my 94 I put 194 LEDs in my OEM 3rd light.

194 LED bulbs

Much brighter and it kept the OEM look. Just be sure you don't end up buying 194 LEDs that have a common contact point on the same side of light or you will pop your 20 amp fuse. Don't ask me how I know this.

No problem. FWIW if you don't mind a non-factory part, Anzo makes some decent LED replacements in both chrome/clear and smoked. I run the smoked one on my red '97 and I've been very happy with it.

Anzo 531064 (clear)

There's also these no-name ones on Amazon that some people here seem to be pretty happy with.

Here's a thread with some discussion on those.

If we're talking about the factory GM third brake light assemblies, then yes. The standard and crew cabs used one design, and extended cabs used another.

All of the aftermarket LED assemblies seem to be a "happy medium" between the two factory designs and work with all cab styles, but don't always seal as well as the OEM assemblies.

You may have some luck at a junkyard or Craigslist parts dealers if you can find one that came off a truck with a cap. My truck had a cap installed in 1995 at the factory and didn't come off until this past September, and the 3rd brake light lens had been mostly shielded from the elements for 26 years. It needed a very light buffing to be almost factory new condition.

Aftermarket LED ones are nice because they illuminate the bed nicely at night. But you can get bed illumination and a 194 LED would prob do good too. i vote yard or ebay
