I agree that modern vehicles should be able to go longer on oil changes, but when you learned from guys who grew up with flathead Ford's and other old cars, their experience is what they pass on. I'm sure most of our GM stuff went past 3K, it was a baseline recommendation. I think that it makes a difference if you use a quality filter and oil too. And I agree that Walmart is cheaper on the oil(I used to buy the filter there too when they still carried it). I don't like giving them my money, but I don't have enough money to be too picky either.

As a Nissan tech I once saw an Altima that went 40k without an oil change. The oil turned into a powder with a liquid-looking sheen on it until you crumbled it. We could definitely tell which customers changed their oil regularly and which didn't. The Altimas had a oil gallery seal behind the front cover that would leak if you didn't change your oil regularly. Once you get more than 5000 miles on your oil, the oil seals begin to harden. But also, that was in the late '90s, and the rubber they're using now is significantly better, higher silicone content, etc.

I'm not a fan of Pennzoil nor Quaker State. I have a general rule in my head - whichever company in an industry advertises the hardest, is probably the crappiest. Pennzoil and Quaker State are reputed to be completely recycled oil, and don't last as long. A dirt track racer I knew swore by Pennzoil, because he changed the oil every race.

Fram filters are hot garbage, unless you buy their "premium" filter at 4x the cost of a Wix filter, and Wix/Mann often makes the filters that Fram slaps their premium label on. I always ask for Wix. On a side note, Mann acquired Wix a little while back, so if the name changes, it's the same company.

I go about 5000 miles between oil changes, I use Valvoline 5w30 (which is a decent compromise between quality oil and cost), and a Wix filter. I don't pay any extra for "high mileage" or any other advertising slogan.

According to the Petroleum Quality Institute Of America, both Pennzoil and Quakerstate have excellent quality control and have superior oil.

I dont like to guess or go by hearsay and commercials have no effect on me. the price of something sure does though.

heres every single motor oil analysis that they have done.

One of My guilty pleasures is watching the oil never changed in XX,*** mile videos on youtube. To me it's fascinating. It's also surprising how many of them were able to be brought back around.

According to the PQIA, they passed the standards. Most everything passed their standards - which is a good statement for the industry, but it's also like a JD Power award for initial quality. Oh, so you screwed the car together well enough at the factory, but how well does it hold up over time? As I stated, I think their oil wears out quicker because it's recycled oil. I'll freely admit my opinion is based on hearsay. As I remember it, bobistheoilguy.com used to rate the oils, but it seems he's toned it down. I'm pretty sure at some point some lawyers representing oil companies threatened a lawsuit.

Anybody got a good site for an in-depth analysis and ratings of oil quality?

I wish I could remember. Some rat motor guy has a test of like 100 different oils. I think he had Pennzoil Ultra Platinum plus some additive as the best.

Found it: https://540ratblog.wordpress.com/

Recycled can be ok. It's the additive package that gets used up. So after a good filtering and new additive, it's got more life to it. I think the only thing is it does shear down to thinner and thinner molecules after a while, so it has to meet viscosity. I'm sure they test that.

I guess his list has been updated since I read it last. Here's what he claims is the best:

1. 5W30 Quaker State “Full Synthetic” (abbreviated QSFS), dexos 1 Gen 2, ILSAC GF-6A, API SP

if you click on the oil your interested in you get to view the analysis in full detail.

heres quakerstate high mileage results from Sept 2019.

Also Quakerstate and Pennzoil are both owned by Shell. Shell is one of the best in the industry and its definitely not recycled oil. at one point quakerstate and pennzoil were the largest US manufacturer of oil, then they were bought by shell and were merged into a massive oil company, with incredibly high standards.

It better be the best, considering what it costs. IIRC it's like $30 at Walmart for a 5 quart jug. Red label QS is $16-17, that's bad enough. Then it's another $5 for the 6th quart, most of which goes in the PF1218. Big jug in the filler, then I run it a little bit to let everything circulate, and then check the level after shutting it off and letting it run back into the pan.
And old Chevys/GMCs don't leak; they're marking their territory!
