Fed the beastie today, $91 for 33.45 gallons, $2.72 per gallon with Kroger points. Regular price is$2.819....this is 87 octane. It wouldn't know what to do if I gave it the higher octane, more expensive stuff! All city driving this tank, 11.3 mpg. Sucks, I know! I suspect it's running a little rich but haven't had a chance to get into why. But 205,000 + miles on original FI parts probably aren't helping....

Since I've owned it (105k), I've rebuilt the trans + **** kit, replaced all the following; new lifters, injectors, ignition sys, cooling system.
245/75r16
4" spindle

I've never seen more than 10mpg.
Drove up and down from Cali to Montana last summer with camper, same results.

City driving, I've touched the 7mpg threshold.

Removing the tailgate is a bad idea for two totally different reasons.

1. It doesn't improve the fuel economy. With the tailgate up, you have a semi-trapped tumbling bubble of air in the box. Acts like a rounded "fastback" from the top of the cab to the top of the tailgate. No tailgate, no trapped bubble of air, worse aerodynamics.

2. When the tailgate is up and latched, it's got a major effect on strengthening the bed if the truck would roll-over. Tailgate down, the sides of the bed fold inward promoting even more rolling and cab damage.

I created an excel spreadsheet to track my fuel economy. I need to add some formulas so it will break out the quick stats up top by vehicle. "Old red" is a 1992 C1500 5.7/5-speed with 3.08 gears on stock tires. As it gets colder I expect the economy to dip to the 14-15 range.

First time I've really measured my truck empty in the two and a half years I've owned it. Made a 500mi round trip journey up to WA and back a couple of weekends ago. Averaged 14.5 mpg, didn't go over 70 mph but a couple of times, tried to just keep the cruise set and keep it steady. Got into some stop-and-go in Seattle or I would have maybe even hit 15. Pretty surprising, really.

Jealous of your truck. I’m going to buy, hopefully, a K2500 next year and I’d like something similar to yours.

In my ‘95 C2500 ECLB with 5.7/4L80e, 4.10s, and stock tires I get about 16mpg.
