Thought a lot about the LS swap. But I really want the truck back on the road. I'm looking hard at crate motors and wondering if anyone has a suggestion on exactly what I can put in my 98 1500 that will replace my 5.7 without too much hassle. I can do the wrenching, but I am not a mechanic nor do I know too much about swaps. Any help would be appreciated! Most likely I will get another 5.7 so I don't have to do too much. Would love more hp...

Yeah if you’re not looking to go off the reservation… looks like a rebuilt 5.7 is the way to go. I would think much diff than that will require wiring/accessory/other modifications and adaptations. I was going to do an LS swap in mine, but as you, I was ready to get it back on the road. I just so happened to have a friend who built the 350 that I have and swapped it for a 6.0LS in his 78 Nova. So I bought the 355 off him.

How about a new GM performance engine? Years ago (~2001) my truck got a 5.7L "Mr Goodwrench" (made in Mexico) and the bottom end is still going strong, it did blow a head gasket 3+ years ago :(

Not sure what you mean by blown but if your heads and intake are good you could consider the HT383 short block, buy a 395 cam, and transfer the top end over. Still not cheap but it's hard to beat the HT383e as an L31 swap for reliability and power. And it's plug and play for your current set-up.

Well, I don't know much about engine specs, doing this on my own. I would love to get a better, more powerful engine than the 5.7 I have. Not sure what is involved with transferring the top end over as you said. If I were to get a HT383 and 395 cam, do I just unbolt my tbi and bolt it into the 383? Excuse the stupid questions... the in depth stuff such as this is out of my league but I'm trying to make it work. Thank you for your help!!! And everyone above as well!

Pretty sure a valve is stuck or broken, engine had over 300k on it. So its either rebuild this one ( out of my elements ) or buy a reman or new engine.... when I pulled the valve cover, cylinder 3 had a rod completely loose and the lifter for that rod was loose as well. The others are all normal, but that one was way off. So my thoughts are just scrap this one and get a new engine. This truck is my baby, I have to get it going again. This a picture of the lifter spring that apparently is stuck in that position.
