I'm with the "buyer" on this one. If you agreed to meet him witha place/time, then you're wrong for then selling them to someone else. I'd never do that to someone. If you're one of those guys that wants to turn it into a race, let me know ahead of time so I can scroll past your ad.
How many times have you passed up a sale just to have the "buyer" not bother to show up? It only took once for me. FCFS.
Granted there could have been better communication, but unless I've dropped a deposit on something, or the seller understands that I'm literally on my way, I expect everything to be subject to prior sale.

There's some who will say, "I've got someone interested, but if they don't come through, it's yours." Then there's those who are first come first serve. I've dealt with both. It only bothers me if I don't get there first. LOL. I recently bought a used truck for my daughter, and the guy held it for me so I could get the money. You just never know how a seller will be, unless they're up front about it.

Good discussion here. I can see both sides. Yes I am at fault for not letting him know there was someone else that was coming to get them before hand. The first guy lived about 30 minutes away from me, so there was a 1.5 hour buffer time between 1st and 2nd buyer. If the first buyer was already on his way, then yea I'd be pretty pissed too if someone did that to me and I strive to not let that happen whenever I sell things. One of my co-workers had that happen to him last weekend, went to go look at a nice 99 Burb for $600 that needed some work. He drove about 40-50 minutes one way to meet the seller, and once he arrived the seller told him he sold it. Hell, even my brother had that happen to him a couple times.

On the other hand, in my ads I always mention: "No holds," so the buyer should know it's a "first one to show up, first served." I too have been burned by quite a few no shows while selling, so that's why I don't hold anything anymore. With most of my sales, I usually let them know when someone else is willing to come before and I can let them know if it's sold. This time I didn't, and that's my fault.

I have had many people say on their way and never show. No money, no sale.
I will not hold for anyone. I get more no shows that set a time than ones that actually show up.
I now give things to friends or relatives in most cases, help my young nephew get a start.

I think if you said “first come , first serve” most people would understand. No holds is probably confusing to people who don’t buy stuff off online sites , Facebook, Craigslist, Offer- Up, regularly. Lessons learned.
Good suggestion, I should probably start putting FCFS instead of the no holds.
