Well, I got there, saw the frame, the horn is bent but visually it looks like the rest *might* be okay, although the steering is definitely off. He said he'd take $600 though so I figured I couldn't go wrong. Bought it, just got home from the three hour trip and other than the battle with the steering, it did perfect. I'd say half of everything under the hood looks to be new (radiator included), zero rust, bench seat is almost pristine, I just have a hard time believing this thing has 270k, and I'd love to get it fixed if possible.

So the question now...how do I go about determining the condition of the frame? Visually it looks fine past the horn but it steers itself all over. Steering wheel has almost 45 degrees of play, so there's that, and when it's pulling on the road, it doesn't seem to prefer either direction, it feels more like bumps and slopes determine which way it pulls. Wouldn't a bent frame make it pull to one side with the wheels straight? Just spitballing here, but I got my hopes up of having bought a decent truck for $600

Oh, and the hubs...yeah, looks like just large center caps.

When frames get hit in the front, the collision energy usually travels further down the rail. It would have to be measured out carefully to find out how far the damage went, if the frame is diamond, or otherwise bent behind the control arm mounts.

Yeah FWIU any 88 - 91 truck with a 454 or HD rating came with a TH400 because GM knew a 700R4/4L60 wouldn't hold up
88-90? The 4L80e came out in 1991.

Even the "square body" RV series 8 lug trucks got the 4L80e in 91...which are pretty darn unique in themselves.

So a '88 2500 GMT 400 had a TH400, yet a '91 80s-derived square body 2500 had a 4L80e... that's kinda weird. Seems backwards, but that's how it was.

It looks like the leading edge of that passenger side door may be affected too.... maybe it was opened after the fender was jammed into it.

Those center caps look a lot like oil filters
And very accessible too!

Yeah the 91 Squarebody is where the OEM NP205 adapter, for the 4L80E comes from. There's other way to do it, but it require modifications, or fabrication from what I understand.

I wonder if the steering on this truck is being affected by the idler arm mount changing position since the frame was hit on that side. Is that an aluminum skid plate I see? I would think that frame work would be prohinitively expensive for a vehicle this old (vs. value of the fixed truck) but it would probably be a great parts truck.

They commonly went in behind the front wheel. Not too much trouble with diamond on this frame style because they gave ahead of the torque box. Pull forward on the front while pulling out behind the LCA rear mount. This could account for the bad drivability. RF wheel would out of position

It's a common term where used autobody vehicles. In which case it's where longitudinal rails tie in cross bracing forming a boxed section. I've never heard the term torque box used in the description of a full frame.

Typically these frames will tweak in this area. This shortens up the rail on one side and instead of measuring square the measurements graph out as a diamond. It can be a very shallow dip in the frame rail and be hardly noticeable until you start measuring.
