I just had a rebuild done on my L29 engine and had a mild towing cam installed and was told that I would need to have a tune put on it.

I just want to make it reliable easy to fix on the road so I found someone who will tune the stock ECU for me and was trying to see if any one has used this business or know of someone that help me with a Stock ECU tune.

I have already considered a 411 swap but I would like to keep it a close to stock as I can with only a few mods Already done: no Cats, Towing Cam, Bosch injectors (5,0 motorsports) MSD Cap, rotor & Coil.

Any ideas?

These guys priced it at $250 for the tune and add $200 for a new ECU

I guess my only thought would be if you want to make changes, I guess you have to send it to them, It's the going cost for my area too. If there is someone local that tunes with HP they can do these trucks, and most locals will offer so adjustments. Sharp looking rig.

Find someone local who uses HP tuners. Cost is 2 credits plus whatever they charge to tune. Mine was $150 all in. Basic performance changes to motor and transmission. Crisper shifts, remove tq management, etc.
There's not as much tunability with the 98-00 PCM's, but the basic stuff is there.

Although my original motor is still in 1 piece, I'm in the same situation as you although I didn't opt for an RV Cam, I did a mild "street" cam although it's not much bigger than the stock cam. I would like to keep the stock ECU simply because I'm already doing a bunch of other electronic changes/ upgrades and swapping ECU's would add additional cost that I don't really have to use. Please update us if you had good success with getting a Mail order Tune or if you ended up finding someone local.

Your cam has less intake duration than stock, but marginally more lift on the same LSA. I'll tell you right now I dove into a stock L29 tune last night and it is GARBAGE, there's a lot to be gained by the tune alone even bone stock which, for all intents and purposes, you are.

If that is the case with the cam them COMP Cam's were not truthful with their assessment of the comparison of my stock cam to their recommendation for a replacement cam for towing.

Ether way I have what I have and still need to tune it, just trying to make it run and tow better.

Stock 454 cam isn't bad, I think it was 208/208 .480"/.480" on a 115 LSA but retarded some. The same cam with more lift, a tighter LSA, and straight up or advanced would be noticeably improved. I'm not sure how much timing could be added across the board, but there is room for improvement there. Bring it in sooner and kill the 60 second PE delay and it'll wake right up.

Some options for mail order tuning of these trucks would be Black Bear Performance, Nelson Performance, PCM4Less, and Wester's Garage.

Sadly they're not as familiar with the L29 as the 350. OP if you were closer I could wake that thing up for the cost of a license.
