how hard would it be to change the dash from a 97 cheyenne to 88 dash ?
it may be a dumb question but i like the way the older interior looks compared to the 92-98
Only significant difference between 88-91 and 92-94 is the Moonie gauges vs the needle gauges, and some cosmetic differences in the electronics.
As for the conversion? Hehe, you're in for a trip.
For one thing, if you're looking to use the Moonie gauges, you're going to have to figure out how to split the VSS from the transmission, because on the 97, the PCM reads it and sends out the required signals for the cruise, speedometer, and ABS. The Moonie gauges do all that internally. If you go with the 92-94 needle gauges, then there won't be an issue.
You have to swap the steering column, the intermediate steering shaft, and the bracket the column mounts to, which requires some spot-weld drilling. It's not necessary to weld it back in tho. Steering shaft does not require modification to work with the 97 gearbox, and the only change to the firewall is cutting the hole wider for the transmission shifter lever and drilling the mounting holes. Oh and you'll need to pick up the transmission shift lever rods and components as well if you have an auto.
Good with wiring? I hope so, cuz you'll have to change up the wiring to the cluster (simple repin if you go with the 92-94, epic disaster if you try for the 88-91), headlight switch, and HVAC system.
Speaking of HVAC system, you'll need a complete system harness INCLUDING the door actuator motors, relays, and resistor pack. Late 93-all 94 used 4-speed systems, all earlier were 3-speed.
The 97 door panels won't contact the dash so you can still use them, but the dome light door jamb switches also won't reach the door panels so you'll need to figure something out for that.
How do I know all this? Well.........
This is a 92-94 setup in my 97 Sierra
