I am getting my transmission rebuilt and while it's out I figured to rebuild the transfer case myself. Where should I go to buy the rebuild kit and is there a schematic of how it goes together?

Not sure where to buy the rebuild kit... I'm not quite there yet myself, but there are a few you tube videos that will be helpful to you. As for me personally, i buy most of my parts online.

When I did my 4L80 swap I had to open up my NP243. All I did was a couple shift fork pads, the obligatory 32 spline output shaft and bearing, and a c clip eliminator. The rest was mint and this was at 220k.

I know this is an old thread but wondering if you ever went through with the home rebuild or not and if so any lessons learned. I have a 1998 k1500 and was able to pick-up a 4L80e complete with the t case for $575 from a 1999 k2500 that rusted out at 119k miles. Transmission is going to a rebuild shop who will also do the conversion but I am looking to do the t case myself. I got an ebay kit (looks like they're all the same) that covers bearings, seals, and pads. The existing t case has rtv on all the flanges so I presume someone's been through it before given that the never wrong internets states that GM only ever used anaerobic case sealant and so should you on rebuilds. Transmission shop wants $600 for the rebuild which is likely fair given the time involved but looking to save some money. I have some concern that it may be beyond my skills (I've done head gaskets on the motor but never anything on the drivetrain) though so looking for input from others who have done it.

What transfer case is it? Sounds like you got a good deal. I've got a NP246 with the autotrac mechanism I may want to rebuild myself. Those have a clutchpack similar to the transmissions, and they are prone to that pump rub issue...

I would think it would not be that difficult to rebuild a transfer case.

New is a NP243c. I think the 4L60e now in my truck is mated to the same but has a 27 spline input shaft so won't mate direct to the 4L80e which uses a 32 spline. I'll likely try home rebuild. There's a good two part Youtube video for it. The only thing I've disassembled so far has been the front yoke and it looks like I'll have to get a 32 spline yoke seal for it since that isn't in the rebuild kit. Also on ebay 2 for $10.

This will help.

If you need help Marcy at motive gear knows EVERYTHING!

My transmission rebuild kit is on intergalactic back-order so be patient. you really can't go wrong with a disassemble and clean. Some people like black RTV for gaskets but I like this stuff.

I completed rebuilding my NP243C last night. The transmission shop rebuilding my 4L80e comped a pass of the casing parts through their parts washer and I asked about casing sealant while waiting mentioning that I was going to use Loctite 518. They gave me a tube of "MOPAR Caoutchouc Silicone RTV" and said to use it since that's what they use with good result. I looked it up and it looks specifically formulated to resist ATF and, since that's what the pros use, so did I. Hard to get hold of though (fortunately mine was gifted), and most of the reviews are in French, but again if the pros use it that's recommendation enough. Only hiccup is that the rear output retainer circlip looks to be stretched because it's a little loose in the channel. Loose enough to get a micro-screwdriver in the gap so I need to replace it. It's noticeably thicker than the other circlips so less "springy" and presumably just got deformed due to overstretching. Sonnax makes an upgrade to the circlip which is $30 on Rock Auto so I ordered it. As I came to find out on reassembly the rear shaft retainer is what keeps the main shaft aligned with the shift and range forks so if it's out of position into the case (which it will be when you place the VSS housing since you have to coax the shaft through the bearing) you can't get the 4x4 sprocket to disengage. Sonnax sells their kit to alleviate the concern of the main shaft walking out the back but I think recessing is just as bad since either can wreck the tcase. So worthwhile purchase I think.
