Hello, new here to the forums. I just recently bought a 88c1500 and it comes with and auto but the tranny went. I was wondering, can I swap to any of the manual options, the nv3500-4500, hm290, or 5lm60? if I can, what else will I need to have it properly work? also if not, then should I just get one rebuilt? any recommendation is highly appreciated, thanks! also if there is a place that has great priced transmissions I cant find any for this year Chevy, what are some sites that come highly approved?

p.s. has the 5.7 350, guy called it a survivor, is that a typical nickname for that 350?

EDIT: just read about the getrag 5 speeds and tremec TKO500, will those work also?

The NV3500 is the transmission that came with the half-tons, but some guys will insist you need an NV4500. I've only seen NV3500s in the local pull-it-yourself yards.

You'll need the transmission, shifter, shift surround pieces and boot, and clutch pedal assembly. I don't know if you'll need a driveshaft or if the 700R4 shaft will work. You'll want to buy the clutch hydraulics as a set, pre-bled. You can get the clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate off the donor truck, but you'll still need a pilot bearing. You might as well buy a clutch kit.

Check the bearing retainer in the bellhousing - the part that the release bearing rides on. If it's gouged up you'll want to replace it with a new piece.
