I going to rebuild my front end on my 90 454SS soon. I was wondering what others use for a coil spring compressor tool? Any particular ones to say away from?

If you install new coil springs like I did on my 1996 Yukon, be aware that new springs are variable rate so the spacing between the coils at the top don’t allow much clearance for compressor mount hooks using the typical compressor you rent from the auto store.

Might find some good info here:

While you’re that deep in the front suspension, you might consider replacing the engine mounts while the bolts are easy to access with the LCA down/loose/off.

Whatever you do, do not use the harbor freight POS.
I used one on the Jetta coils and it broke one of the ears off and the spring came out sideways and punched a hole in the drywall.
It was a pretty close call.
If you rent one, look it over real carefully for cracks and wear before you use it.
Coils springs are no joke so be carefull

I don't know of a good compressor but to be careful. I almost lost half a finger due to the one i used years ago. Had it slip of the spring while I was decompressing it. Caught my middle finger took it almost to the bone. I now have a crooked finger and a scar that is shaped like the hook end of the compressor.

Here is the one I bought a few months ago when I was installing my suspension kit:

I bought two other ones before I found this one that did the trick.

But you do have to be so respectful of what you are doing with any large spring compressor. There is so much energy stored in a large compressed spring.

A coil spring, when not compressed with the right tool, can cause a real injury. The TV shows that remove front coil springs with a floor jack, also have a project finished in a half hour.Do yourself a solid, and use the right tool.I have an OTC 7054B that I used on my 95 c1500.It uses a threaded rod that fits inside the spring. Two support plates, one on top below the upper control arm, and the other above the lower control arm.Obviously the shock is removed first.A barrel nut is inserted, pressing on the lower plate. It is driven by a thrust bearing that is threaded to the rod.Sounds complicated, its not.I bought this OTC tool about ten years ago,and I recall it was not cheap.I guess you have to ask yourself if its worth it to you.
