I have a friend who was pulling a horse trailer in his 93 GMT400 half ton 4x4. One of the rear brake pads had some of the "asbestos"(I think) strip break away from the metal part of the brake pad shoe and get wedged in place. It locked that one rear wheel up and the vehicle and trailer jack-knifed and did some damage. I have seen it as well on my 1995 4x4 rear drums. Easy fix. New pads. I'm glad your are going to have a look.

A 1500 almost certainly has the horrible leading/trailing shoe rear brakes. They won't adjust in-use unless you use the park brake regularly.

The shoes are all the same--no primary/secondary like Duo-Servo brakes. Common for the "front" shoe to have most of the wear.

Yes, the service brakes have to be properly assembled and adjusted BEFORE you adjust the park brake.

Yes, contaminated linings (brake fluid, axle grease) can cause locking.

Had this happen also with bonded store brand shoes, the glue let loose and the shoe spun off backing and wedged into other shoe locking up rear. From then on i always buy riveted rear shoes.

Europaman seems to have vanished. I was going to ask him if his screen name comes from driving Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman's "bread-van".

I had a soft spot in my head for those, but never enough coin to scratch that itch.

So I fixed the problem. When I replaced the shoes and the master cylinder I failed to put any grease on the backing plate at the points of shoe contact, and there was some rough places from rust I had not cleaned well enough causing the shoes to now move freely. Lesson learned. Thanks for all ya'lls help.

Sorry for the span of disappearance....been real busy and can't get the settings on this forum to send me a notification of replies.
Anyway, I am Europaman because I built an experimental aircraft called a Europa. Go to You Tube and search "Troy Maynor Europa" if you're interested.
