Yup, Z71 only gets ya decals, shocks & skidplates. G80 was an option and as far as the gears, GU6 for 3.42 and GT4 for 3.73, I'd say it's about a 50/50 mix.
As for the newer Z71s, not sure about what year it started, however now you don't automatically get 4wd when you get a Z71.

Looking at my purchase agreement, the G80 was an $330CAN option when I ordered my 4x2 Cheyenne. But I believe it came with the 4x4 Z71 off road package, if I am reading this Chevy 1996 brochure right.

Could very well be different for the Canadian market and/or Chevy vs GMC, but the original window sticker for my 1996 GMC K1500 Z71 has the G80 listed as a separate option ($252) from the Z71 package.

I have had a 1990 GMC K1500 4x4 and a 1993 Chevy C1500 both with GU6/G80 combo, but my current 1995 Chevy K1500 Z71 has GU6 only. All of them had a towing package from the factory, all 5.7L 4L60 or 60E. All depends on what options are selected.
