I'm building a 1999 Tahoe and I'm trying to decide on the components I need for my sound system. I currently have a Pioneer AVH-110BT double din head unit but I havn't bought any speakers or amp yet. Could someone please provide some recomendations on which speakers would sound good theres so many different brands amd types out there and I'm not familuar enough with car audio and really want to best bang for my buck. Current budget is $350-450 for everything. I would like to replace the 4ea 6.5's replace the 4x10's with either 5x8's or 6x9's and add pair of shallow mount 8's in custom enclosures in the back doors. I already have 200sf of thermal/acoustic insulation that I'm going to use to insulate the entire cab amd double insulate all of the doors to try to help out with the heat down here in south MS.

That's a tight budget if you want the subs and an amp as well, unless you're looking to go used. For the mids, polk audio is a good bang for buck, I favor infinity, but they're going to top out your budget just on the mids, leaving no room for subs and amp. Alpine makes decent stuff at the lower price points, as does kicker. I'm a fan of Kickers higher end stuff, not much experience with 8" subs from them though, but their amps do right by me as well.

Well I've been looking at JBL stuff and found I can get 4ea 6.5 club 6500c components for $144, 2ea club 8620 6x8 2way coaxial for $62 and 8" model 810 subs for $60ea which would leave about $120 for an amp at the $450 end of my budget but I'm just not real sure how all of that work sound together. I've been out of the car audio scene for years.

I've heard some JBL stuff, It wasn't terrible, and it's another Harman company like infinity, so pending listening in person, I'd say it's got a fighting chance. At 200W RMS and 88db sensitivity, it looks like the best at under $100. Tuned a bit high for my taste, but I think that comes with the territory of an 8" sub.

My go-to budget recommendation for speakers these days is the Kicker KS series. Not sure how they stack up against the JBLs you picked out budget wise, but they use real rubber surrounds and silk dome tweeters. Really nice for the money.

Do they fit the doors without modification?

Rear doors, yes. The fronts will take some custom fitting if you want to put the tweeters in the factory location but that's true of any component set. The woofer basket drops right in. They sell coaxial versions as well if you don't want to mess with fitting a separate tweeter.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

Our son wants “bass” (Lord help us) in his 98, and am looking ahead to Christmas.

My truck still has the stock radio and speakers if that tells you anything about my level of audio expertise. Plug-and-play was invented for people like me.

Well I ended up picking up 2 sets of JBL club 6500 component 6.5 speakers and a pair of 5x7/6x8 club 8620's to replace the 4x10's in the back for $184 shipped from walmart.com and I'm going to order a pair of the JBL 810 8" subs next week
