Check out the exterior door handles from 1A Auto, they are all-metal, and not plastic. Well worth the $25 for a new one, O'Reilly charged me $30 for my Dorman handle that I put on my 97, which kinda sucks. It has the metal handle, but plastic bezel.
How hard is it to replace the exterior handle?

It's about an easy-moderate difficulty. This video helped me back when I replaced my door handles on my 98 a couple years back:

One thing I didn't do was removing the "inner" door panel, I just removed the screws and tried to pry it to get my hand in there. When I replaced the handle on my 97, I forgot remove the 3 Torx head bolts for the door latch and it made removing and installing the handle a PITA. Once I removed them, the installation was way easier.
