Finally some good weather for painting. Nason Epoxy Primer/Sealer (491-16) to start followed by 4 coats of Nason 2K Urethane Primer (421-17) using my Devilbiss Finishline 4. Next step.... More Sanding. Not real happy with my spray gun. I may need to upgrade to a better one. I know really good painter can get good results with a cheap gun but can a inexperience painter have better results with a better gun? Specifically, I don't like the spray pattern and the needle doesn't seam to seal against the fluid tip, causing paint to flow when I'm not pulling the trigger. I may be doing something wrong when I assembly to gun. I'm open to any thoughts.

My 2 cents - if you are going to paint a vehicle outside, you aren't going to be able to do a good enough job to make an expensive gun worth any more than a WORKING cheap gun. The outdoor elements are just too hard to control. That doesn't mean that you can't do the job while painting outside, I just don't think that spending $$$ on a fancy gun will help.

With that said - I am not sure that your gun is working correctly. I used a devilbiss for years, and it worked pretty good.

These are probably dumb questions - but did you clean the tip thoroughly? Did you try adjusting the screws on back? PSI? Primer too thick/might need to be thinned?

If you are looking for an excuse to buy another gun - most of us that were serious about painting had a gun for primer, another for basecoat, and the best one was for clear. Nobody touched the clear gun haha.

OK. How about the questions that I asked?

I do thoroughly clean my gun with gun cleaner and the brushes. I was doing some investigating and found I may have the pressure too low. I set the pressure at the regulator at around 10 psi. Well the instructions said the pressure at the tip should be around 10 psi and about 23 psi at the regulator. I did move the pressure around when I was trying to set the gun up but I don't think I went as high as 23 at my regulator. My regulator is at the gun.

At this point in my painting experience I not sure how to tell if my primer is too thick.

I also ordered a new needle for my gun. Maybe that will help with the excess paint flow at the tip.

I'm no expert, however; my brother has been toying around with painting for a little bit on and off over the last pervious years. He recently acquired a "higher end" gun but was very disappointed with the outcome after spraying some flat paint. Said something about the needle was too fine or something like that. So he went back to using his old gun and had much better results - maybe he's just more use to the old setup? Gonna take some trial and error to figure it out? Just thought I'd share that useless information...I'll show myself out.
