On my 1990, 400, I do not have an accessory position on the key switch. It currently has a tilt column in it. I don't know if that was a factory option or not.

With the key in the lock position I can not rotate it backwards to what I think would/should be the accessory position.

I can roll it forward one "notch" and nothing happens at that position.

One more notch forward and everything lights up (dash gauges, AC/heater, radio and anything that would normally be on while running).

Next forward lights up the starter.

I'm starting to believe I do not have the original column in my truck. If this is the case is there a relatively simple way to add that accessory position short of a new correct switch and a rewire job?

While not an emergency it would be kind of nice to have that accessory position working.

Thank you!

I've repaired a couple for this issue; it's often the tumbler itself. If you let it go long enough other positions can fail, too. Happened in my '88 T/A; went to work one day and couldn't turn it back to the lock position to get the key out.

By the way the other positions you describe are correct. There's lock, unlock (but still off), on, and start.

The lock cylinder on my 88 was so worn out before I replaced it that I could remove the key in any position. It only takes a couple hours to replace with the right tools and some patience. Plenty of guidance available on Youtube to step you through it.

Yes it's lots easier to do on the pre airbag trucks. You'll need a steering wheel puller and a tool to depress the lock plate (the first thing you see when you have the the wheel off). The parts store you get the new lock cylinder from should have these available for rental or loan. Another nice thing about the earlier trucks is that the ignition key only is used for that lock, so you don't have to rekey all your locks so they match. Just be sure if you have a hide a key, that you get a copy of the new ignition key in it. Good luck!

Fully understood! In Houston we don't actually have y'all 's temps, but the humidity gets it close. I have a big pick a part yard within a few miles of the trailer park, but they're only open 9 to 4, and that's in the worst of the heat. Takes all the fun out of going out and playing with trucks......even my own!

I have/had all the tools to remove a steering wheel for about 30 years now! hahaha If I do this I think I'll get the kit so all locks are keyed the same. I guess all this new fangled stuff has me a bit spoiled!!! Still seems weird the tumbler is preventing the lock from rotating back???

Thanks for the insite!!!!!

The ignition key on your '88 only fits the ignition, so when you replace the tumbler it will come with new keys. No need to change anything else as your door keys (and console lid, if equipped) use a different key from the ignition.

It wasn't until '95 that GMT400's went to the one-key-fits-everything design.

I used to have same problem in my 94 K1500. I had to have mine replaced because it got stuck in the on position when the truck was running and I couldn’t turn it off. The new one goes back one click now.
