No, he just needs gears and tow haul so he locks 3rd.

I could do 80 with the same truck, same tire diameter, no tune, 4.10s, and headers. Headers isn't going to get THAT big of an improvement.

Brody, throw that shifter in and we/you can get your tow/haul set up to really tow

Agreed. Mine which is only mildly tuned with 4:10 gears and stock tire size will haul 6000lbs on flat ground at 70 like nothing is back there.

If I remember correctly, the factory tune will lock the TC if D is selected or OD is selected. Just needs to be over the minimum mph, which for a 4:10 gear w/245s I think was 41mph up to 25% throttle position.

@BowtieBrody, those gears and tire combo won’t let you lockup unless you get close to around 58mph at any throttle position even when D is selected. It’ll be like a whole new truck once you gear down those diffs.

Is it possible to run in 4th without locking the TC? Or would that be worse for the tranny than locking up the TC in 3rd?
Just curious because later trucks with the 4l80 had a position on the column for D separate from OD which I thought allowed the driver to run without TC lockup in 4th.

Tow/haul in the lextech tune, from default, prevents lock in 4th. However I have mine lock at high speeds (like 75). I'm not going to be hauling ass with a heavy load ever, I'd like to stay closer to the speed limit then (max in my area is around 65-70). However for me to get up to my preferred cruising speed I used toe-in and zoom up to 80, then I release tow/haul and let it shift normally.

Yes, I believe you're correct. If just "3" is selected on our shifter with the lextech tune then 3rd will have a locked TC.

What’s the logic behind preventing lockup in 4th?

If the TC can hand the power in 3rd without slipping surely it can handle it just as well in 4th? Maybe less lock-unlock cycles? I think all just boils down to common sense. If you’re in a situation where it is going to be a lot of shifting over rolling hills or whatever, drop down into 3rd. Flat ground, easy pull, I like the freedom to run in OD locked up.

Sometimes I just want an override switch that allows me to lock up and unlock whenever the heck I want to!

The black box trans tune sucked, and so does the van tune I started with. At this point, I'm just going to full flash the dually with the 1500's operating system and restart from there. Brody do you have 12212156? It's much more responsive to changes in TCC settings. I thought the 411 stuff sucked stock too. They have 2nd locking at WOT and 3/4 lockup was way stingy. Unlocked may multiply torque but it also cooks the trans.

This! I had a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee that had an override that would force unlock but not necessarily force it to lock unless you feathered the throttle just right. Still miss that old Jeep

You're already 0411 swapped right? VSRacing China boi!

If I did do a turbski I'd probably go with something Holset flavored, but that's a slippery slope, and if there's any slippery slope I would throw myself down is a Cummins swap;

Yeah I'm hoping 4.10s will add some grunt, it's definitely moving up the list very rapidly.

I have no clue, I'm sure @Mangonesailor knows which one I have.

If you got it from Lextech he likely had you start with the 12212156 but best to verify.

What does that number mean? All this tuning stuff is way over my head.

It's the operating system number on the 0411, they were commonly found on some 01 and most 02 F-Body Camaros and some trucks but I would have to go back in all the **** I had saved when I was researching the 0411 swap.

Just my 2 cents on gears - My 5.7 k2500 with 4.10 gears (265 tires) hauls the camper nicely in 3rd gear. It won't stay in OD while pulling, doesn't seem to have enough grunt. I assumed your 7.4 would be enough to make 4.10's the answer, but maybe not? You were stating that you couldn't pull those pallets over 50 mph? I have gone well north of 80 mph (pulling the camper) to pass with my 5.7.

If you are planning/hoping to be able to pull in OD - maybe 4.88 (or lower) is better?
