Yea I’m not talking the dinky OE coolers. 40K GVW cooler does the job.
Consider measuring the temperature of the fluid before you go ape-**** on the trans cooler.

Anything under 170 is pointless if not actually harmful. 190--230 is fine.

Crap like this was getting pushed on me when I was in trade school DECADES ago. And it wasn't "new" then. So if you look at your calendar, and it's 1960 where you live, this MIGHT be accurate.

^^^If it's 2020 in your town, (or later, as this post ages) this chart is BULLSHIT. Trans fluid, trans seals, clutch material...have all improved greatly since the info in this chart was developed back in the Kennedy-Johnson era (if not the Eisenhower era). YES, there was a time when a transmission with a hundred-thousand miles was considered suspect. Engines wouldn't go that long, either. Not any more.

If you THINK you need more trans cooler...PUT A GAUGE on it, or look at the temp sensor info on the scan tool if your OBD has a trans temp sensor. Keep in mind that the OEM sometimes doesn't turn on the radiator cooling fan until 220 degrees, so trans fluid going back to the trans would be over 200 degrees if it's "cooled" by an in-radiator heat exchanger--and there's nothing wrong with that.

Fwiw - I have looked at using the oem dual electric fans from later trucks, with or without the matching alum one row radiator. The pieces from an '07 ish 1500 work truck with tow package looks to have the same core size as my '88 C3500 SRW 2wd 454 truck. Looking at the various options, it looks like there are 5, 7 and 9 blade fans, depending on the truck. It seems to me that the oem stuff would match or exceed anything from the aftermarket.
Dave

Edit - core height on gmt-400 is taller vs '07. Width is similar. 400 radiator sits in rubber saddles, similar to top. Later radiator has pins on bottom.

Putting tranny heat into the radiator is silly as the OE cooler is integrated. Also towing 15-20K with that cooler is silly. When I drop 4K into a Stage 3 Billet 4L80E it gets a cooler bigger the better. That’s heat dissipation.

So you didn't check your temps before to validate the need for an upgraded cooler. Thanks for confirming.

Yea I built a truck smart ass!

OE ran 200-210* as that’s all an integrated radiator cooler can manage on a Big Block! Putting heat in a radiator.

Heavy towing now runs 160-170*

I love you opinions but do you actually have or have ever built anything? Sounds like you got some learning left to do!

Was that directed at @Schurkey or @Supercharged111 ? Either way, both of them are extremely knowledgeable, and Supercharged has built some pretty slick ****. Schurkey has shared some very in depth info in previous threads that has helped tons of other members.
