Hello! I have a 1998 Silverado K1500, extended cab and short bed. It has a 5.0 Vortec in it, with a rebuilt transmission and pozi lockers. Sadly, my father decided to take it out and play mad max in a field, (It was raising hell for street treads.) And the bottom end started knocking and went out. I have a 1999 LS Silverado with a 4.8L LS Vortec I bought for 300 bucks with a destroyed shock and frame. I know my 1998 uses a white and black PCM unit type..... thing. I do not know the style of the LS 4.8, but I know it's different. I am going to pull the 4.8 out and replace the 5.0 with it. What electronic hell awaits me? Somebody on Gmtruckclub told me I would be doing what's called a ... 0411 swap? Any advice would be appreciated greatly.

Unfortunately both O.P. and his one responder haven't been seen since mid '21. Not gonna get an answer here, though "Bear" 's suggestion has merit...

I bet he figured out it was too much work for too little engine. My suggestion to anyone considering a 4.8L is to drive one in the same size vehicle. They make zero torque, even less than a 4.3L V6 at lower engine speeds. Unless one spends all their time over 3,000 rpm the 305 has more more torque than the 4.8.

Only reason I know to use a 4.8 is I've heard they respond well to turbos......

They but a 5.3 or 6.0L repond even better to them. NA even a 6.0L is a dog until 3,500 rpm. A LS is like the inverse of a TBI engine. TBI 350 makes all its power right when you hit the throttle. The LS makes its power closer to redline. The old Vortec SBC is somewhere in the middle of those extremes. I tuned on a 4.8L with an intake, headers and exhaust and it made 210 whp and 220 wtq on 87 octane on a safe tune. It did not even crack 200 ft/lbs until it was over 3,000 rpm. By comparison the stock 4.3L Vortec I messed with made 215 wtq @ 2,500 and gained close to 20 ft/lbs from tuning it. The 4.3L only made 180 hp but it had much more low-midrange torque. The stock L30 305 makes a solid 40 ft/lbs at the crank or about 30 wtq more than the 4.3L does.

I don't really think you'll miss the 5.0. Maybe the sound.

You can probably find a 5.3 bottom end pretty cheap if you decide to open the motor up. The 4.8 pistons are actually desirable because of the flat tops.

As far as LS swaps go, this is about the easiest. The donor truck has everything you need, including the 0411.

I agree on finding a 5.3L crank and rods. Leave the 4.8L flat tops. Everything I have ever driven with a 4.8L was a dog in my opinon. The 5.0L honestly runs better except over 4,500 rpm.

People want to hate on the L30 305 Vortec but they get up go, considering they are 220-230 hp on paper. That 2008 4.8L is supposed to be like 295 hp on paper.

Back in the day I was truck shopping and test drove a 4.8 and a 5.3. I chose the 5.3. :)

The 4.8 would have been fine though.
