Problem is that it's not a posi. It's a locker. If you call it a posi, it's very likely that you will influence others' opinions of it too and they'll end up with the wrong lube. There's specifically a GM TSB that says to NOT use posi additive in the Eaton Gov-Loc, and describes the problems that can occur if you do.

It's a question that gets asked over and over on forums all around the web - so clearly there is a large degree of confusion, and calling the unit something that it isn't, paired with people arguing about correct lube types, ain't helping :D

Im not entirely sure what rear end I have still, im told it has 3.73 gears and I know for a fact its not an open diff. It could be an LSD or a locker, id have to see my RPO codes for that. Buuuuut those are faded and can no longer be read

It's not about you trying to help out, it's that you asked for somebody else to write up all the possible fluid capacities of all the different options for a series of tricks that extend over 12 years and several different variations. Information that could be readily found, and over the past several years this site has been up, has never been requested. If you had offered to do it after requesting where to find it, you may have been met with different results, but as it stands, it sounds as if you respect our time less than your own.

Thats the thing, if you search it youll find different answers of fluid levels all over the place. If anything im looking for a "give or take" ballpark answer. But I can always try and find all of them myself and make a write-up. I luckily still have my owners manual and I have a haynes manual. But I am by no means an experienced mechanic with many years under my belt, so my suggestions arent definitive and to live by

Vortec 5.7's (and I think for most 350's as well) take 5 qts. of oil after an oil change. For weight of oil, GM says 5W-30, so that's what I use.

On the 2wd 350/5.7 it also depends upon your choice of oil filter. The PF1218 AC and the older style PF35 or equivalent hold around 10 to 16 ounces of oil. Depends on how much you let it soak up and then put more in. The PF46E that the LS motors use only holds 8 ounces if you're lucky. It's best to have some oil in the filter when you put it on so the pump has fresh oil to get into the engine. Obviously this is difficult to do on the 4x4 since the filter mounts differently. But if you have the room to run the old style PF 932 long filter, it adds over a quart of capacity to the system. Just doesn't have the drain back valve that the vortec likes. On a TBI motor it's fine if you have the room for it, ran one on my R2500 Burb with no issue and could go 5000 miles or more on an oil change.

While we're talking oils here - do your engine oils blacken? If so, how quickly (in miles)?

That is true. I did forget to mention that I use the ACDelco PF52E filter on my Vortec 350s. My dad runs one of those long Wix filters on his 454, since his is straight down. I wished GM didn't make these filters on the Vortec 350s so awkward, but I guess the front driveshaft has rust prevention now, so that's a plus hahaha.

A G80 "gov-loc" locks by springs and weights centrifugally. A type of LSD. It is a different animal then a clutch or cone style Lsd that works on friction and without a doubt calls for different fluid. Gm nomenclature "posi" would indicate clutches.

G 80 diff's have clutches.
