just found a 97 suburban 2500 for sale. its had a new fuel pump, water pump and manafold gaskets.

I've read its a good idea to avoid the 97s i just can't find out why.

I have a 95 and it's been a great vehicle... Although I can understand the avoidance from the OBD1 and parts perspective. However I haven't had as bunch of things breaking over the years, yet anyway.

For me, I needed the 7.4L engine / 4.10 gears option for towing, and my 95 was the first one I found in good condition, within driving distance, with that somewhat-rare combo.

Whoopsie! Another thing that I forgot was the 95 used 350 injectors at somewhere around 25 psi to feed the 454.

94 and 95 7.4's used the higher pressure setup, IIRC the pressure spec is 25-32 psi. So the injectors, regulator, and pump are different on those years with the 7.4.

I had it in my head that they used the 350 injectors. I'd forgotten that the 94 did the raised pressure too. Apparently I've had a bit too many 400s and they're starting to blur a bit with the details...

Just out of curiosity, is there an advantage or disadvantage to having the fuel system run higher pressure? Or is that just a distinction between model years, and not a significant factor otherwise?

A smaller injector fired at a higher pressure will have better atomization. It will also deliver more fuel for the same duty cycle.
