this exact process worked for me as well. now just trying to figure out why my equalizer only has bass and treble...the middle buttons do nothing
You've got the wrong amp section in place.. To upgrade to to the equalizer deck you need to also take the an amp from a system that already had an equalizer, otherwise you'll run into the issue you're having.

Not sure, is there a letter in the vin that would tell me?
I think that was one of those snide and ignorant comments which imply the quality is just ****. As far as I know, all of those Delco radios came out of Kokomo, Indiana. So no matter where it was built, the radios came from the same source.. But yes, within the RPO code section there will be a three digit code which designates which plant your truck was built in. None of them ever came out of Detroit, Pontiac would be the closest plant (RPO "GMC"). Other possible plants, Ft. Wayne, IN, Flint, MI, Oshawa, ON Canada, and Janesville, WI & Arlington, TX.

Here's a link to a massive list of GM RPO codes. Have fun.

I agree with the cleaning and lube. The rack that holds the cassette was not moving freely in mine and would hang . Cleaning and a tiny amount of lube cured this. Also clean the head and rollers good too.
