Before you toss that engine in your truck, I would buy some engine oil break in additive and put it in the truck before you crank it up. Also, be sure to hold the RPM's up between 2000 and 2500 RPM's for 20 minutes, in case your engine builder is less than honest and you have a comp 280H flat tappet (which is the closest thing to the specs you have mentioned). Hate for a cam lobe to go flat in short order and you stuck with an engine that needs a cam swap anyway.
Good to know. I know John Deere sell 10w30 break in oil would that be good. My diffs and transfercase and coolant is all John Deere and this new motor will only run with 10w30 John Deere oil but we do have lots of 10w30 break in oil kicking around or is there a specific break in additive you recommend. I've installed lots of used motors never a new rebuilt one.

Another option would be to have blackbear tune your ecm for that and then you would be go to go.

I was going to mention this as well but wasn't sure if it was necessary. For $350 you could have a decent tune and free alterations for life with zero down time on the truck.

I've bin looking into blackbear but wouldn't a dyno tune best ? as I need it to run on regular 87 gas. Plus $350 that would be US dollars and with shipping and duty fees plus dollar difference that $350 will basically triple as we have pos Justin pos libereral himself back in power here in Canada that means tax tax tax and after them taxes they tax us on the tax a couple more times. Performance Plus in Saskatoon said $700 they needed the truck for about seven hours.

GM EOS is a good choice, as well as any of the other zddp break in additives.

Yes, an in person tune is always going to be the best option if possible. But personally I wouldn't hesitate to run a mail order tune from Black Bear for something as simple as a cam swap. They can tune for 87 octane with no issues and they're great people to work with.

The only thing that would make me nervous about going with a mail order tune is the fact that you don't seem 100% sure of what cam you have. Without that info they may not be able to set everything up optimally.

Well I'm picking up my motor on the 1st I'll see what paperwork he's got and then send that off to blackbear iv bin in touch with them already they seem great to deal with but I also like supporting my local businesses and Performance Plus is really the only real dyno tuning shop left in Saskatchewan so I would really like to give this small shop the business even though there couple hours away. This guy I bought the motor from says he built a few of these 5.7 vortecs back when he ran gmt400s but he's moved onto a newer duramax and has decided to have no more projects and is liquidating all his old project stuff he's done with owning multiple trucks and was talking to him couple hours ago and he assures me I can run without a tune no problem but I would need a tune to get the best results from the cam swap he said when I pick the motor up he will have all the paperwork and photo's of the build start to crate in order.

IF (and a BIG IF) it's a flat tappet cam, you can use any dino oil (like Valvoline 5w-30) and a bottle of ZDDP. Like mentioned run it between 2000 - 2500RPM for 20 minutes, shut it off, change the oil with the same stuff, run it for 500 miles, then change the oil again. IMO Moblie1 0w-40 (which is fairly high in Zinc and Phosphorus) works fine. I've run 15w-50 in the summer before but the higher Zinc/Phosphorus may plug you cats. Been running 0w-40 for 18 years with no worn bump stick or burning/losing any oil.

And if it's not a flat tappet, none of that is necessary.

You will have a better grip on what to do once you get all the paper wk and the actual cam card. Right now all that can be done is guess as to what plan of action to take.

Me personally, and this is just me, but i wouldn't run it with out a tune in fear of it being too lean. If you are determined to get it to a dyno shop, (which i don't blame you) but can't get it there for how ever long, Id do what let it snow said and get black bear to tune it until u can get it dyno'd. What's $350 vs another new engine or an engine rebuild? Black bear's tune will be better than a stock tune
