Not sure where to post this but here it goes. Got a 97 K1500 and the front diff is leaking and I don’t want to rebuild it, never use 4wd and the shaft has been out also the cv shafts are out but the middle pieces are in the hubs . What are the benefits( if any) by just removing the entire diff and keeping it off until I get it rebuilt.

Long as the CV goes to the hub/wheel bearing then there won't be any issues. Need the CV end cause it holds the bearing together. Without it the wheels will fall off.

Right I have it through the hub. Just seeing if there’s any benefit to dropping the diff and rolling without till it gets rebuilt

The only reason I can possibly imagine to keep it at this point, is that it may provide some structural support to the frame. Honestly though I don't imagine it provides that much in the line of strength. I might be inclined to make a crossmember to replace it and maybe provide some protection to your oil pan.

So you think dropping it would be fine?
