The shaft was loose in mine. Had vertical play as well as a considerable amount of horizontal play compared to the new one.

I got one like this, the actual one I had bought is unavailable now, but it came with a cracked cap and the rotor was very warped. Super cheap parts were sent out there, so stick with the new ones you just bought.

If I remember right the computer does all the ignition timing. When you stab the distributor back in you’ll get a separate code something like p1345 for crank position. When I did mine I didn’t quite get it perfect but I got it close enough to run, then I drove it to my cousins shop who charged me a case of Mountain Dew to use the scanner to Match it up.

So i bought a new cap and rotor. old one was corroded. i am wondering if the distributer shaft itself is the problem. Im waiting to get a timing light from my buddy to check the timing. if it is off then that might be my problem. I think im im going to pull off the cap and rotor i put on and buy a new whole assembly.
timing light will do no good on your engine. there is no timing to set on a 96+. All you can do is set the cam sensor retard and you need a scanner to do that.
