Most of the people posting in this thread that have done 'The Bed Hole Mod' are no longer contributing members & have not been for y-e-a-r-s!
Hmmm...
I'd give odds that none of them even own a 400 any more!
I don't have a 400 anymore myself, but I still love them :) and will probably own more in the future as these 800's just aren't grabbing me as much as I had hoped. I just don't have time for projects though and I don't really want/can't justify "new" trucks.

I wouldn't chop a hole in an 800 bed either..

X2 - I wouldn't chop a hole in any bed. It sounds like everyone is expecting to replace the fuel pump once a Month! It doesn't take that much to tip up the bed when you need to get to it - just buy a good pump in the 1st place.

Sitting on the side of the road 1000 miles from home, with the camper in tow and an unhappy wife... Trying to unbolt and lift the box to deal with a fuel pump problem - that makes an access panel seem like a better idea.

I’ve replaced my pump once, but had to replace a fuel line, and a seal within the past three years. I will admit the idea is unorthodox, but the amount of time it has saved me was precious. Also, I’m a survivalist. Being able to swap parts, make repairs, and all as quickly as possible is important to me. At least that’s my personal justification.

Sorry but, if you do your homework and replace any and all potentially compromised components at the time - i.e. fuel lines, ground connections, suction sock, etc you shouldn't have to touch the tank and fittings for years.

I use a bedliner so the hole isin`t seen until its needed. and I have changed the pump several times in the 20+ years I`ve owned it. Not going to drop a tank or lift the bed.

I thank the original poster for a good starting point, for those fortunate enough to not have had to change a fuel pump yet, count your blessings. My self, original owner of 1998 Z71, 329,000mi, second engine, third tranny and drive this truck regularly on 1,000mi trips. I concur with and still buy OE replacement pumps but have had them fail in 20,000mi. So, this was my 5th pump replacement. My body is a lot older, and this truck will be with me for another 300Kmi. Just plain tired of dropping the tank!!! Access panel done the right way... 30 minutes and $7.00 at the salvage yard, rivnuts and hex drive button head screws, panel will be prepped and painted as soon as the paint arrives.
