All,

My 1999 K1500 is reading about 30% too fast (speedometer), causing the odometer to also read 30% fast. Presumably the prior owner had larger wheels/tires on it and had it re calibrated, however, I've also heard that this is a common failure point on the GMT400.

What is the most cost-effective way of fixing this speedometer/odometer situation? I called the stealership and they want $600 to replace the cluster and reprogram the PCM. There has to be a cheaper/easier way to re calibrate a speedometer on this truck, right? Any thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated.

^ Yup. Black Bear Performance can definitely do it. You're still going to have to pay the $350 for a tune from them, but it's worth every penny and they'll alter it for free if you ever want to change something. Also much better than paying the same amount of money for a handheld programmer that doesn't have nearly the capabilities.

Awesome, thanks so much guys!

Does the Black Bear tune really increase performance on a stock K1500? Or is it designed for modified vehicles?

You'll definitely still notice it on a stock truck. I can't speak for the V8 trucks personally but I had them tune my '97 C1500 with the 4.3L V6 (Stock other than 3" exhaust and shorty headers) and it was a pretty amazing difference.

1st I would look and see if they installed a speedometer correction box between the PCM and cluster. You can calibrate it via tuning, but some do it with a module that corrects the PCM's output so it gives the speedo the required pulses per mile. Wouldn't want you to spend the money on a tune and it be the same when you're done. If you were near central Fl, I could flash a stock tune in it for you.

If Blackbear didn't quite get it right the first time, I believe reflashes are free in a case like that.

Yup, any alterations to a Black Bear tune are free. You just pay for shipping on the PCM which is like $25 combined.
