For reference, here's what a brand new 31x10.5 BFG KO2 looks like in the spare location on the factory 7" wide rim

Also for reference - I had the opportunity to weigh a few things before and after a trip to the tire shop:
  • The original Michelin spare tire on the factory rim weighs: 55 lbs
  • A brand new 31x10.5 BFG KO2 on on the factory rim weighs: 71 lbs
  • An 8 year old 50% worn 285-75/16 BFG KO2 on a Procomp 69 rim weighs: 71 lbs
  • A brand new 285-75/16 BFG KO2 on a Procomp 69 rim weighs: 80 lbs

Considering the low clearance between the tire and the exhaust, couldn't you fab a heat shield out of some sheet metal? Seems like that would be a pretty elegant solution. After all the tire doesn't mind getting warm, it would only mind getting really hot. A shield would take care of that.

How hot does the ass end of the tailpipe really get?
After a very short drive I got 220F. Hot enough that you dont want the spare touching it - which is what will happen with a 285/75-16 and the movement of the exhuast (rubber hangars). There are a number of easy fixes, but for for me the 31x10.5 does the job. I'll try to post a pic later of a brand new 285 test fit.

Here's some pics of a brand new 285/75-16 BFG KO2 in the spare location. Its hard to tell, but the tire is resting at an angle because it doesn't fit between the hitch. Its very close to the exhaust as well as the brake line.

If you are willing to spend some time on this project, you could make it work: I'd start with fabricating some short spacers to gap the tire from the cross-memeber a tad, so it doesn't interfere with the hitch. The rear brake line would just need some persuasion. Exhaust would need some adjustments to move it over for more clearance. Not a project I'm going to tackle soon, but maybe one of these days I'll get to it.
