If everything looks fine (IE: nothing on the gauges), try reseating the cluster on it's dash connector.

I will try this someday when I feel like pulling my dash apart because its a pita. Too many wires running to my switches..

I know this is an old thread, but my 98 Chevy K1500 started doing this same issue after my tach, speedo and prndl all quit working. The trans would start out in high gear also. After looking at a schematic of the cluster, i found 2 fuses that power the gauges: #4 and #20. On mine #20 was the issue, only there was power through the fuse when everything above was not working. The only common point for my particular issue is the connection at the cluster. Now, those gauges decided to start working again and the truck is acting fine other than the check gauges light coming on at startup and flashing for a short while. I'll be taking my dash apart soon and reseating that connection soon and hopefully I won't have any more issues.

My 97 a couple months did the same thing as your 98, but the check gauge light didn’t come on. Found out it was the ignition switch (not the lock cylinder) and it cured my gauge problem and made the tranny shift correctly again.

My 1998 Ext Cab 4x4 started the infamous "Check Gauges" during the first real cold morning at 20 degrees. Goes away in a few seconds or a minute worst case. Anything warmer than 30 degrees outside it does not even flicker. Gauges work fine and all within range. I will reseat the cluster back into the terminals with warmer weather. Love these trucks.
