Just curious, are air bag codes stored in the PCM after only being triggered once? The reason I ask is that the air bag light stayed on in my '97 K1500 Suburban tonight for an entire drive cycle. First time I've ever seen that light in the 20+ years this vehicle has been in the family. I started it up later on in the night and the light stayed off, everything behaved as normal. Just wondering, if I hook up a Tech-2 or simliar scanner can I pull a code from that isolated incident? Alternatively, does anyone have any experience with an issue like this?

Bump, it did it again last night for one drive cycle. Anyone know anything about airbag codes? I'm about ready to spend some cash on a Tech 2 but just want to make sure it'll help me in this situation.

You might want to try to go to an auto parts store and see if they can pull the air bag codes. Their scanners should be able to pull them. Most, if not all, do it for free, so you won't be out anything, except gas. ;)

You can check the airbag sensors. If they get crusty it will turn the light on. One is up front on the bottom of the radiator support and there is another one under the drivers seat (I have seen a few of those that pretty much disintegrated from being under damp carpet for awhile). There might be others, but those two are ones I have seen go bad

Really? I was under the impression that their scanners were no better than a common bluetooth OBD2 module. I don't think any parts stores around here have scanners that fancy, I could be wrong though.

I just did some Googling and it looks like a clone Tech 2 will read SIR/SRS codes just fine. Looks like I may finally end up purchasing one, it's been on my list for a few years.

Seen some good reviews on the Tech 2, hopefully it works out for you!

Any progress on the light? Mine has been coming on recently, but mostly in the mornings when we have some moisture/dew. (No such thing as snow in Alabama).

I recently "took in" my late-father's 98 C1500 and while it runs well, tracking down all the electrical gremlins has been a CHORE. I'm trying to handle all the safety stuff first and this is at the top of my list.

Nope, sorry! I actually haven't seen it come on again since I posted this thread so it's been moved to the back burner. I'll probably buy one of the clone Tech 2s after my wallet recovers from Christmas and dig into this a little deeper.
