Yes I did. Out of some drop off aluminum we had at our shop. It is 2 bowties made out of the same 1/8 aluminum. I installed them with some nut rivets that are riveted into the frame work under the hood. The bowties are bolted to this with 10-32 screws. Here are a few pics of it as I made it.

So I wired the LEDs on the bowtie to come on with the hood light. I removed the hood light bulb, and installed LEDs on the back fire wall, and on the hood near where the latch catch is. All of this lights up when up open the hood, and goes off when you shut the hood.

It is SOOOO much work. It took me a week or better to pull it off. Not to mention we dont have the aluminum at the shop any more, I used it LOL. A sheet a of aluminum is maybe $125, And I may get 3 or maybe 4 out of a sheet. The nut rivets are a royal pain to work with too. I may do some in the future, but Im to busy to build them for now.

For those inexperienced with electrical that wan to do their own, buy wire that has many small strands like used for audio systems or welding ground lead. There are cheap wires that have a few larger strands. Electricity runs on the outside of each strand so many small strands will carry more than a few larger strands. I bought a kit to put the battery in the trunk of a Chevelle in the 80's, the wire had large strands, the car would not crank over fast enough to start. I switched to welding ground lead and it worked.
Having a clean connection is important. Remove the rust and coatings where the lugs contact. I add an internal/external lock washer (star washer) to each connection. This will help bite into the metal for a good connection. The OEM's use these on their grounds, usually right under the nit or bolt.

Does this also apply to the 96-00 trucks?

Yes it does! I put dual batteries on my truck because i felt it might need it for multiple reasons. When i did that i upgraded everything, too, and i have a '98 K3500.
