I've been wanting to do a double din swap for a few years but always talked myself out of it due to the amount of work involved. Recently I got introduced to Apple Car Play and I was sold! Did some install research, opened my wallet to Crutchfield for a Pioneer AVH-1550NEX and took a firm grip on a dremel and went to work. Below is the starting point. Great sounding head unit but not a double din.

It's a tight fit! I ended up cutting the left part of the rear support to allow wiring to drop downward. I also trimmed about an inch across off the rear upper portion to allow a little more clearance as it seems to pinch the head unit as you push it back in place.

Test to see if it works. Installed the bypass to avoid the parking brake. Also installed XMSirius hardware and backup camera.

Used a dremel to cut, grind and file to fit. Test fit and cut, test fit and file, and on and on till it's as good as it can be. I didn't want to cut anymore than necessary so this was time consuming.

Almost finished. Just gotta dial in the cover plate to fit as good as possible. It's not perfect but it's a huge advancement in technology and looks decent. Hope this helps anyone on the fence about this upgrade.

Doing this soon. I have the head unit all set, but in RE: the cutting, how brittle is the trim? I don't have a dremel but i do have big shears that I feel like would snap-cut the trim and then I could file from there. Thoughts? Should I ask someone who has a dremel?

Depends on your area but most interior plastics of this era are so brittle you'd shatter the whole thing just looking at it wrong. I highly recommend a Dremel for any sort of work like that.

I used a razorblade and scored the plastic until I was able to just snap it off.

I did my new double din install on my 2000 k2500 ccsb. Bought the new NEX pioneer with wireless apple car play. Also it’s an awesome setup because it’s half the depth of the standard double din units. I did absolutely no trimming on my dash as everyone else has to do. Makes the install much easier.

Post some pics!

Sorry, forgot to post pics. I've had this completed for awhile now. Now working on the steering wheel radio controls.
