I just bought a 1994 C3500 that looks like it came from the factory/dealer with a Ramsey Winch. Didn't ask too many questions when I bought it (paid $1000). It has an extra battery tray on the driver's side for an aux. battery and there's a relay behind the wwiper fluid res. that's called the aux. battery relay. I followed the wire from one side of the relay to the dist block on the pass. side of the firewall. The wire from the other side of the relay was going to the aux. battery. The wire to the coil goes inside the cab, but I haven't been able to find where exactly it goes. I'm just curious how this would work having both positives of the 2 batteries connected together. I'm just wondering what the common practice is for using an extra battery for the winch. I have the Haynes manual but it's not very helpful. I've ordered a (hopefully) more complete manual from ebay which should be here in a couple days.

The controller cable and +wire going to the winch was going under the hood when I bought it so I'm not sure if they never fully installed it or what.

Its totally fine to run a second battery connected by the positive wires. (thats the only way to do it unless you want to fry your truck with 24 volts)
The second battery would just provide some additional power reserve if you had a long pull or if the engine wasn't running. Not a bad thing to have; it'll also help with cold starts.
Not sure with the controller.

The more offroad dedicated forums, like pirate, have a lot of info on different ways of wiring in a second battery and using solenoids/isolators to protect your main battery.
