Yea, they are better than OE, but you do a lot better opening up the exhaust system. Headers, high flow cats, and free flowing mufflers, (NOT Flowmasters) X pipe, will all help. You need a muffler that you can look straight through before installed. If you look inside and see stuff in there this will impede flow. You want your exhaust to flow as freely as possible. Keep in mind that an engine is just a big air compressor. The more air-fuel you can get into it, and the more exhaust, you can get out of it, the more power it will make.

It's my understanding the stock ignition components are best (if you stay around 5k rpm).... I may be wrong, but that's what I've heard for many, many years.
Ignition upgrades should be the last mod to do when trying to get a half of a tenth out of the drag strip times..... Lol. A half of a tenth.... Lol.

Most aftermarket systems are offshore manufactured and their quality is NOT the same as back in the 60s/70s when everyone used MSD/Accel etc .....

For reliability and cost.... Stay GM. But, as I said, I may be wrong.. . just what I've heard.

Thanks guys been playing with thing a little it's a little new for me though I have. Bunch of 60s and 70s stuff that I play with like my bracket car it's a old 71 nova ss with a 486 tunnel ramed little different than this little injected engine because I'm not sure my limit with out having to have it tuned and I drive this truck alot and the dependability is awesome

I’m still running my original coil on my 1989 gmc. It’s never given me a issue.

For your next upgrade, I would think a camshaft change would be the only other thing that would be noticeable. A cam with an operating range of say 1000-5000rpm would work nicely. The Comp Cams 252XFI HR-13 would be great for extra power without loosing fuel economy.

The only ignition upgrades built for a L31 worth a damn are the DUI Module, Coil, Cap and Rotor. The cap and rotor lasted better than the garbage from Delphi/Delco. The module and coil also gave much better spark energy. Definately do not want to have a random spark hit you from that. Their Live Wires are junk though. I used Accell 300+ race wires. I had to buy two kits to make them. A standard small block kit and a LT1 kit. The LT1 kit has the correct distributor end. The small block kit had the correct plug wire length and the 90° boots for the plugs. It was the only wire set that held up to the heat of the headers in an Express van engine compartment. I still use the 5 year old Accel wires with the D585 LS coils on my 24x conversion. Coils are remote mounted on the rear of the engine above the distributor body.

I run all stock ignition on my 1500 in sig with headers and a blower. I do have socks on the 6 and 8 plug wires though.
