If you go somewhere that makes you buy the whole column, straighten the steering forward and tie the spokes of the wheel to the gear shift lever with stretch wrap, a whole lot of painter's tape, something that won't hurt the wheel - before disconnecting the column from the steering shaft or gearbox. You don't want the wheel position to change is the point. Install it this way and only remove the strapping material after it's connected to your gearbox. Uncontrolled turning of the wheel or it being not in the correct position on install can/will damage the clockspring. Think of it it this way: it's a long set of wires coiled up inside a ring; if you get it out of position and turn the wheel you will break it once it turns past its limit.

I'm not sure how this junkyard is with the rules about steering wheels, so I'll have to see what happens. Thanks for the advice!

It's called Speedway Salvage in Granite City Il. I've been there before, really nice people. Very large place. They have wheelbarrows you take around like shopping carts. Women shop at malls and men shop at junkyards. :)
Our pull-a-part is like that. Not only do they have wheelbarrows, but you can rent a golf cart too. I think its $10 to rent a golf cart. It is a very big yard.

The pic is just a small corner of the yard, and the drawn map gives you an idea of how many different brand of cars and trucks they have. Also the prices are cheap. Only issue is they are very busy and get picked every day. So sometimes finding what you want can be a task.

lol exactly. That's awesome that they let you use wheel barrows, I'm always a little hesitant to bring one because my hands are always full haha.

Sounds like you guys have some luxury j/y's lol. That's actually cool that they have that stuff at the yard you can use.

Yeah it is. That place looks like a man's paradise! Before I had the truck, I'd go to the junkyard just for fun. Sometimes exploring junked cars is a cool adventure, and I've found a few classic cars too which was really cool.
Only down side, is that they have put a few little guys out of buisness. They are open every day except Christmas day. 8 to 5 or 5:30 i think, something like that. Also the cars and trucks a packed a little tighter than in the pic. I know they have an A frame to pull engines with, and all cars and trucks are up off of the ground. They weld 2 old rims together so that one is flat on the ground, and the other one is standing up. They put this on the frame so that the vehicle is off the ground and you can get under it. I walked the GM section a few weeks ago, it took me about 2 hours to look at everything. Stopping to look at seats, and inside GMT 400s. I left with 2 fog light switches. I really just wanted to look at seats. None of the 400s had a good front drivers seat. I did see some buckets in several things that could work, but I think I will just have my OE 60 40 recovered. I found a shop that can get the OE meterial. I just need to do the bottom of the 60 side and top of the console. Going to be around $300.
