Why would it matter what engine it is? The tranny swap doesnt care what engine it is. It could be a 4 cyl and it wouldnt make any difference except with the bell housing. If you have a motor that is already connected to a T56, then you dont even have to worry about that.

Different input and output shafts, I believe different ratios but don't quote me on that one. Different bellhousing, gonna be a lot of work and money to make it work on a GM. I imagine the tail housing is also different. Just grab a Viper motor too and swap both in.

I did an auto to manual conversion, best thing I did was contact SilverSport transmissions. they will build a custom kit just for conversion you are doing. they have 5 speeds through 6 speeds available. couldn't recommend them enough.

What are the "other options" for 4 wheel drive model transmissions (1997 K1500)? Looking for the best options for towing with a 383 stroker engine, to get great towing, and reasonable fuel mpg and rpms that aren't high and too noisy when not towing anything. Can any modern transmissions be adapted to work in our old trucks?

Rockland makes a kit to convert a T56 to 4wd. But the lack of a creeper first would suck for towing.

Does that kit eliminate the two speed transfer case, forcing you to lose low range 4 wheel drive? It's not like I trying to tow 10,000lbs or more with my half ton truck, just 5,000 to 6,500lbs I'm guessing.

Well if it keeps 4wd, you keep 4lo. I'm not sure I understand where your question is coming from.

My question is coming from your previous comment about not having a creeper gear. How is the conversion any different than the stock automatic as far as gearing is concerned? The standard automatic doesn't have a creeper gear either, unless you count putting it into 4-Low, which is why your comment confused me and I asked if the conversion from auto to manual transmission deleted 4-Low transfer case. Not trying to be difficult, just trying to clarify your first comment. In fact, the gearing for a manual 6 speed would definitely be better and lower than a 4 speed automatic transmission. Maybe you can explain your "Creeper Gear" comment for me?

Well this thread is all about manuals, and truck manuals have creeper first gears to get heavy loads moving from a standstill. Regardless of an automatic's gearing, it can always fall back on the converter stalling. The only consequence there is dumping heat into the fluid
Basically, without a creeper first gear in a manual, it can be hell on your clutch getting it rolling from a standstill, especially on an incline.
