Won’t shift out of 1st. Speedometer reads zero. This has happened twice. Unhook the battery for 5 mins and it goes away. Suggestions? Sounds like VSS needs replaced

Why would the VSS "heal" by disconnecting the battery?

I'd say instrument cluster or ECM. The service manual will describe the circuit from VSS through to ECM.

When the instrument cluster failed on my '88, the speedo, odo, cruise, TCC and cruise control all quit working. The 88 doesn't have an electronic-controlled trans, so shifting wasn't affected aside from the TCC.
