Done. Box installed heres pix. Bolts down to a diesel battery tray like a battery. Only 1 bolt. Sucker is freakin solid in there. I used 1/8" tall spacers between the plate and the box. This elevates the box enough to clear the lip on the battery tray. I left the lip on there because it adds strength to the tray.

Now some ideas to load it up. I was thinking spare ICM. The part in the distributor, along with tools to swap it like a socket and screwdriver with 1/4" drive on the end, spare ignition coil, gloves, 3/8 ratchet, deep socket to fit tensioner for belt change if it breaks, and cheater pipe for ratchet. I breaker bar is too long to fit. Spare belt under front seat. Spare long spark plug wire. Maybe a copy of a Haynes manual trouble codes page thats laminated along with paperclip for the ALDL port. Cheapie multimeter.

Looks great! I wouldn’t get too overboard with loading it with stuff. Simplicity. Qt of oil, a spare plug and wire, roll of electrical tape, hand full of various sized zip ties. Some pliers and screw drivers. Maybe a small roll of spare electrical wiring.

The best word I can use to describe this installation is "Elegant". I suspect that if you came up with a mount to take the place of the battery tray (since they are not so easy to find) you might have a market for a kit. Thanks for a great idea and fine write up.

Thanks for the kudos. I used a diesel battery tray i bought from the dealer waaay back when this truck was near brand new. Punched a few holes in the inner fender where it was dimpled for drilling for the tray. Used it for years to hold tools while working on the truck, decided to finally finish adding my stoarge box. I designed it So this fits right onto a stock diesel battery tray.

To make up a kit without the diesel batt tray, i dont think it would fit in there as solid as it does, cost to make the pieces , it wouldent be worth it to make to sell. I may concider pulling the tray out and repainting it though.

Agreed but, if I put a spare roll of electrical tape in there, after 1 summer, I'd have everything else encapsulated in black goo, LOL

An easy way around that is to put goo producing materials into a ziplock bag. A liner of waxed paper will keep it from sticking to the bag. I see your point about the battery tray vs a fabbed part. I'll have to start digging for a tray for mine. Always another project !

I may still sandblast and redo the paint on the lid, but fill in the little spot weld dimples with JB weld
