Okay guys, I'm about to loose my damn mind. I have a 1995 gmc seirra k1500, 4x4 4l60e trans and all stock. So I bought the truck with no 2nd gear and drove it until it lost all gears (knew the trans was bad). Oredered a rebuilt transmission from a place in Bay City, MI. So this when it gets fun first trans from them lasted about 700 miles, pump failure (all diagnosis are ideas transmissions arent my strong suit) sent it back get another (warranty) well that one failed as well couldn't tell why. Got another that one failed. I called them and they said bring it down and they rebuilt it there. Turned out that one the plantary gears broke, well. That all was in early feburary. Well today the trans felt like it slipped some and looked at the guild, of course black and smelling bad. With this new trans it started smelling what I thought was trans fluid in the cab, however no leaks or anything anywhere. All of these were filled with OEM type fluid, new trans coolers each time filled right up to the lines on the dipstick. My question is could there be something thay is cooking these things? Truck isn't heavily abused or anything like that. I use it as a truck do tow and have a snowmobile in the back sometimes but nothing crazy. Any help would be appreciated.

Check all of the trans cooler lines for places where it could be pinched and restricting the flow. My uncle went through similar problems as you and that was to root cause.

It would help if you were to install a temp gauge to monitor trans temp, it doesn't have to be fancy any temp gauge would work, I installed my sensor and tee, electric, around the trans cooler area because it was a lot easier then crawling under. Just remove the grill

All the trans lines are stright and no loops, or no restrictions.

I have wanted to put one on however I have 2 coolers in place so i would've thought that it was running cool enough.

4L80e swap.

This. ^^^

I only killed two 4L60Es behind my V6 in the red truck, but one of them was a nearly $3K build that had just about every possible upgrade we could throw at it. Lasted about 10K miles. I know there are lots of people out there who don't seem to have any major problems with 4L60Es in these trucks but I am not one of them. I'm of the belief that the 4L60E was a poor choice for the full size trucks on GM's part. I swapped in a 250K mile junkyard 4L80E after my last incident and it's been fine so far.

The only thing I can think of is you say you use a new trans cooler every time, does that include the trans cooler that's built into the radiator or are you just replacing the AUX cooler? If you never replaced the radiator maybe there's some sediment or blockage built up in there.

Personally I would stop spending time and money on 4L60Es and go straight for a 4L80E swap.

It is a 95. It is a stand alone year transmission. If they aren't building to 95 specs (pulse width modulation of solenoids instead of traditional on/off solenoids) then you'll be smoking trannies.

While the 4L60E *is* a weak design not best suited for a fullsize truck, there's definitely something being overlooked for those rebuilds to be falling apart so quickly. Just no f'ing way that's the transmission design's fault, you know? They lived 100K+ on the regular when they were bone stock, and improvements have been discovered years ago to strengthen them during a rebuild.

So while it's hip and cool to say 700R4/4L60/4L60E's are weak, and they are, they're not THAT WEAK...! :D
