My 1990 sport has a driver's side inside door latch that will not retract the handle correctly. It feels like the spring is not working or something. I have the door apart and I am going to drill out the rivets and take a look at what is going on. It got to single digits here so I've held off on finishing.

Question, has anyone done this and if so did you replace a spring to repair it or should I simply by a replacement aftermarket piece and screw it back in? From what I can see all the replacement aftermarket parts, barring purchasing of a real $$$ OEM door handle, have plastic latches and I would like to retain the metal handle material of the original.

I would even consider taking the metal one off my original if I went the replacement route and swapping the plastic piece if it came to that. If you have done this job, do you have any words of wisdom on what approach makes sense based on previous experience?

Incidentally found a photo of the back of the unit and presume the something wrong with mine concerning the spring that is shown on the left side of the image. It looks like the handle/pin mechanism is it is held in by a pin of some sort.

I've dug and dug on the internet to see if I could get some recon on this in video form but came up empty. I have also included a photo of a new replacement offering for reference.

Yup. As stated above, there is usually more wrong than just the spring. The replacements are cheap in both cost and build quality.
