Pulled the trans and had it rebuilt. I sat there looking at the motor and I just couldn't make myself pull out an engine that was running fine. I'll deal with it when it tanks.
Just my 2 cents but with the trans out I would throw a rear main in. If you luck is like mine it will start leaking shortly after you put the trans back in. Then have to go through all that work again.

Rear main is stupid easy, don't need to yank the retainer at all. There are 3 cuts in the retainer that allow you to pry the seal out and slap another one in. This is what I did with the Camaro last year. As far as a halfass overhaul, I did one on the Camaro back in 2015 but that was a supposed 67k motor before it got dropped in a race car and beat on for God only knows how many seasons. It's still putting the numbers down as I just hit the dyno. Also had the heads off of my 1500 around 230k, slid in new bearings and a marine cam, slapped it back together. As long as there isn't a huge ass ridge or piston knock I'd do it, but I'm just that way. Willing to put a lot of effort into trying to see what I can get away with depending on the circumstances.

If I plan on keeping the truck for a long time and I’m going that far into a engine its gonna get a full rebuild. That’s a lot of labor to go through just to cheapen out for a few hundred bucks in machine work and parts. The rebuild kits are pretty cheap. I would go as far as a 383 with performance/aluminum heads.

If you got a lot of time on your hands and like pulling motors I guess you can do the cheap rebuild.
