Oddball...not at all!
There's plenty of 'em. Surely less common than a regular 1500 or an 8-lug 2500, but there's plenty of them out there, and they've been in the GMT400 lineup since the beginning. For parts trucks, I've owned a 1988 C2500 light duty (reg cab), a 1989 C2500 light duty (reg cab).. and as a personal truck, a 1994 C2500 light duty extended cab.

IMO they're a great way to get the 14sf and better rear spring pack without having to do a swap, other than that there's very little difference between them and a 1500...except the insurance rate! At least here in TX I found myself paying considerably higher insurance on the '94 C2500 LD vs. a '94 C1500 and the only difference between them was the GVWR. They rated it compared to other 2500's and charged me a lot more, and nothing I could do about it.
Also, I had a few customers with C2500 LD's...
