I use 10w30 super tech. It burns a quart to a quart and a half per tank of fuel so i can't bring myself to put anything more expensive in it. Sometimes it will get a quart or 2 of 15w40 mobile if im at work and need to top it off and don't have a quart on hand.

I used to use Quaker state Defy 10w-30 because of the higher ZDDP content. Now is use synthetic Rotella 10w-30. both my truck and my nova like this oil. The rotella is cheap also i always see deals on it, and the quaker state no longer makes the defy.

your oil pressure doesnt seem that low to me. isnt it like 7 or 8lbs per 1000 rpms? i cant remeber the exact spec. and the oil pressure gauges in these trucks are notorious for being off. thats where mine always ran when hot when it got closer to needing a oil change. everyone i know runs 10w-30 in there sbc's and it gets cold here.

All you guys that have engines that "like" a certain oil.... how do you know that? Do you have conversations with your engines? Are you tracking some metric over time?

i always run a ACdelco filter. and my engines do like certain oils. oils that contain ZDDP. both my vehicles have flat tappet cams, and modern oils do not contain much ZDDP due to plugging catalytic converters. with the low spring pressure on my stock TBI 350, it prolly doesnt matter much. more aggressive cams and springs need as much zddp as u can get.

Since I put a factory long block in my 88 silverado in 2002 and after the top end build's break in period last month, I've used nothing but Mobile 1 0/40 (same as I use in my 2004 Croosfire w/factory recommended 7,500 mi intervals), sometimes in the the heat of the summer, 15/50 (here in AZ). have yet to burn a drop of oil between changes. Plenty of Zinc and Phosphorus for a flat tappet cam, https://mobiloil.com/~/media/amer/us/pvl/files/pdfs/mobil-1-oil-product-specs-guide.pdf Watch out for racing or diesel oils, if you have a cat, you'll risk plugging it.

Whatever the cheapest 10W-30 I can get at Walmart. When I ran 5W-30, I had a lost of smoking when I would leave a stop. Bad valve seals. Switching to 10W-30 pretty much stopped that.

Only because that's what I've put in my '96 (mobile 1 5w-30) since 1999 and it hasn't had any engine problems and still gets about 17-18 mpg. Since about 2007, i been afraid to put any other oil in it. 162K
